Climate & modal shift

The targets

−55%EU net greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 compared with 1990
2050EU climate neutrality
~25%transport's share of EU greenhouse gas emissions
−90%cut in transport emissions by 2050 under the Green Deal
2045climate neutrality target the SVIKG is geared to

The EU figures come from recitals 1 and 2 of the TEN-T Regulation.

Modal shift needs loading units

The EU aims to double rail's share of freight, with the main leg by rail and only the first and last mile by road. Combined transport is therefore the tool of modal shift.

For projects subject to an environmental impact assessment, the regulation also requires climate proofing. The cost of greenhouse gas emissions is included in the cost-benefit analysis (Art. 46(2)).

What that means: it is not the truck that shifts, but the loading unit. Every container, every swap body and every craneable trailer is a piece of that shift.
